Building the App That Moved Expecting and Empowered Beyond Facebook and Into Their Own Platform

Expecting and Empowered
Pregnancy & Postpartum Wellness
Expecting and Empowered is a wellness brand built around supporting pregnant women and new mothers with expert-backed workout guides, health resources, and community. Their products had built a real following - but those followers were scattered across social media, and their guides lived on paper. They wanted to give their audience something they could carry with them: a mobile app that put personalized workouts, educational content, and community support in one place, at any point in the pregnancy journey.
The Challenge

A brand with real traction, but no platform they owned.

Expecting and Empowered had built something people genuinely wanted. Their workout guides were trusted. Their community was engaged. But that community lived inside a Facebook group, which meant the brand had no direct relationship with its users, no ability to personalize the experience, and no visibility into how people were actually engaging with their content.

Physical guides can't be updated once they're printed. Social media communities are fragmented and controlled by the platform, not the brand. There was no way to track progress, tailor recommendations by trimester, or know which content was actually helping users versus going unread.

To grow the way they wanted to grow, Expecting and Empowered needed to move off someone else's platform and onto their own.
What They Needed

One app to replace four disconnected problems.

01

Wider, More Accessible Reach

Physical guides and printed materials have a ceiling. A mobile app meant any woman, anywhere, could access the content they needed - regardless of where they were in their pregnancy.
02

A Branded Community Space

Facebook groups are convenient but they're rented land. Expecting and Empowered needed a community hub they owned, where the brand experience was consistent and controlled.
03

Personalized Content

A workout routine that's safe at 12 weeks is different from one at 32 weeks. The app needed to know where a user was in their journey and adapt accordingly.
04

Real Engagement Data

Without data, there's no way to improve. The brand needed visibility into what content users were actually using and what was falling flat.
What We Built

A feature set built around the user's actual journey.

Personalized Workout Plans

Pregnancy-safe routines tailored to each user's current trimester and fitness level. The right content at the right stage - automatically.

Community Hub

A dedicated, branded space for women to share experiences, ask questions, and support one another - built inside the app, not borrowed from a social platform.

Guides and Resources

Downloadable guides and educational content available offline, so users have access to what they need whether or not they have a signal.

Apple Watch Integration

Seamless syncing so users could track workouts and progress directly from their wrist - removing friction from one of the most important daily habits.
The Approach

How IDE Interactive Approached It

01

Research Before Assumptions

Before any design or development work started, we spent time understanding the actual user. That meant digging into the Facebook groups where Expecting and Empowered's community already lived - reading how women talked about their pregnancies, what questions came up repeatedly, and what gaps the existing content wasn't filling.

We also looked at competitor apps to understand what was already in the market and where the opportunities were. The goal wasn't to build a better version of something that already existed. It was to build something that actually addressed what this specific audience needed at each stage of their pregnancy and postpartum journey.
02

Personalization as the Core Feature, Not an Add-On

A generic workout library doesn't serve a pregnant woman at 8 weeks the same way it serves someone at 36 weeks. We designed the app so that personalization wasn't a feature you had to find - it was the starting point. Users set their trimester and fitness level, and the app adapted. As users progressed, the content progressed with them. That kind of experience builds the daily habit that drives retention, and it's reflected in the numbers: 8.5K daily active users and an 80% retention rate in the first three months.
03

Giving the Community a Home They Own

Moving an engaged Facebook group into a branded app is not a simple lift. People have habits. They know where to go. The community hub had to be compelling enough to shift that behavior. We built a dedicated space inside the app where women could share experiences, ask questions, and support each other - with the brand's identity woven throughout. Within the first three months, community engagement grew by 40%. The audience didn't just follow the brand to a new platform. They showed up more.
04

Apple Watch Integration: Reducing Friction at the Moment That Matters

The moment most likely to break a workout habit is the moment when it's inconvenient to start. Apple Watch integration removed a step. Users could see their plan, track progress, and log activity from their wrist without pulling out their phone. For a brand whose entire proposition is helping women stay active through one of the most physically demanding periods of their lives, removing that friction wasn't a nice-to-have. It was the point.
